For the third year in a row, men will free-fall through the sky and into the Boston Harbor. No, this isn’t a Tom Petty song. And no, The Weather Girls’ It’s Raining Men isn’t a prophecy about to come true (for the most part).
It’s the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, held at the ICA this year on Sunday, August 25 for two glorious afternoon hours.

More than 10 world-class divers will jump from a huge platform attached to the ICA, competing for a shot at the prestigious Red Bull Diving World Series title. They will be judged by five international judges, including four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis. Diving isn’t an extreme sport you get to see every day, especially while standing on the streets of Boston, but Boston was actually the first urban stop on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series tour, putting it in the ranks of diving spots like the French isles of La Rochelle, the Danish Capital’s Opera House, and the volcanic archipelago of the Azores in Portugal.
So ok, we’d rather see men gracefully tumble from the top of a volcano, but diving from 90 feet off of anything without screaming like a little baby is pretty impressive, so we’ll take what we can get.
And hey, if one of the divers happens to land in your bed, that’s cool too.
Online RSVP for the event is sold out, but you can still catch all the action on TV! Here are the bars where you’ll definitely be able to watch those divers dive (and calm those vicarious nerves with a beer or two): Atlantic Beer Garden, Battery Park, Bell in Hand, Clarke’s, Jerry Remys, Mija, Pier 6, Stadium (the Financial District and South Boston locations), The Greatest Bar, The Place, and Whiskey Priest. –Ed.
