SOAPBOX: FUNG WAHHHH?

If you refer to yourself as a Bostonian, then you obviously know about the questionable albeit affordable services of the Fung Wah Bus. This week, the bus service that’s been making runs between Boston’s South Station and New York City since 1997 has entered hot water again. Even the feds are stepping in, trying to pull these persistent and wacky drivers out from behind the wheels of their broken-axelled shitboxes and off of the road. Rocky, the proverbial Fung Wah Squirrel replies “But that trick never works!” to which Bullwinkle the Federal Government Moose responds, “This time for sure!”

You tell me how this magic trick is going to turn out.

Fung Wah has a long and horrifying history of malfunctions and terrible, irresponsible drivers. Despite being labeled an “imminent hazard” by Public Utilities Department of Massachusetts’s Ann G. Berwick on Friday February 22, The New York Times states, “Even those customers who were aware of the regulatory action said that the $15 fare would outweigh any potential safety concerns.” This latest story started when it was discovered that 21 of Fung Wah’s 28 buses FAILED INSPECTION due to cracked axels and engine carriages, loose and missing bolts, ineffective and/or incorrect welds, and electrical problems.

The insanity of it all is that the bus service was still selling tickets THE AFTERNOON AFTER THEY WERE TOLD TO GET OFF THE ROADS.

These crazy mofos even went so far as to incorporate white, anonymous buses and commissioned the Brooklyn charter company Omega Express to help them out. According to the NYT, “A man who identified himself as the president of Omega declined repeatedly to discuss his company’s involvement.” Oh, not legit enough reasons to call these buses off the road? Let’s take a look at this cockroach of a company who’s been through physically everything but nuclear warfare and still decides to run for the sake of a few bucks and at the stake of a few hundred human skeletal structures and thousands of psyches.

One report in the Boston Globe’s September 7, 2006 issue disclosed one bus carrying 57 passengers “overturning on an off-ramp leading from I-290 to Route 12 in Auburn. State Police said 34 of the passengers were taken to the hospital … police cited the driver, Chuandai Chen, 44, of Brooklyn, N.Y., for driving beyond ‘reasonable and proper speed.’ Police refused to allow a replacement driver to take the passengers to Boston because he had a false log book and he could not speak English, two federal violations, said State Police Trooper Thomas Ryan.”

Oh, joy, undocumented foreign employees careening down the highway in 12-tons of steel.

SEEMS LEGIT.

Keep in mind that these enlightening tales do not account for the humorously large accumulation of parking fees for standing in no-standing/no-parking zones, or the occasional hit-and-run.

It begs the question, HOW THE ACTUAL FUNG IS THIS BUS SLASH ASSISTED SUICIDE SERVICE STILL EVEN A THING?!
