Thomas Menino has been the Mayor of Boston for the majority of most of our lives. In the eyes of many, he’s such a fixture of the city that it’s difficult to imagine someone else running the asylum.
Contrary to the belief held by people who don’t understand how democracy works, Menino was not born into his Mayor position. He got elected after being a councilman for almost a decade. This recently unearthed WGBH special follows Lil’ Tom Menino on the campaign trail for councilman, three decades ago.
Though the program itself isn’t the most compelling thing that’s ever been on TV, it’s fun to watch an amiable Menino bring the same attitude and determination to enrich lives of the people on the trail. What’s really interesting isn’t seeing Big Baby Menino, but seeing the spectacularly ’80s-tinged city.
Old public access programs are one of the best forms of time travel we’ve ever had.
