BOSTON SCIENCE FICTION FILM FESTIVAL & MARATHON

Screen shot 2014-02-09 at 2.51.43 PM

After 39 years, The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival shows no sign of slowing as it once again descends upon the Somerville Theatre (or Starship Somerville, if you prefer) from February 7th-17th. The 10 days will erupt like an Alien chestburster, with 30 features, 50 shorts and a 24-hour movie marathon. Let’s get busy.

In contrast to the recent spate of end-of-the-world comedies, Coherence will see its East Coast premiere at the festival on February 12th. Starring Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World), it follows a dinner on the eve of an apocalypse, with a tone closer to Cloverfield than comedic entries like This is The End  and The World’s End. (Whedonverse alert: Brendon is slated to introduce the film in person.)

On February 13th, Doctor Who-perfreaks can catch the world premiere of Who’s Changing: An Adventure in Time with Fans, a documentary on Whovian fan culture. During the 24-hour marathon, the non-canon oddity Dr. Who and the Daleks—a campy 1965 spinoff starring Hammer Horror icon Peter Cushing—will play for your sonic screwdriver-carrying pleasure.

For those brave at heart and stout in constitution, the 24-hour marathon is the perfect finale to 10 days of fresh sci-fi. Get there early, bring a pillow (just in case), stock up on snacks, and hunker down for nonstop nerdery. The 1980 film version of Flash Gordon will make an appearance, as well as the Her-like computer love story, Electric Dreams. Joining the marathon is Michael Crichton’s Westworld, which plays on the familiar fear of death at a theme park (predating Crichton’s own Jurassic Park by almost two decades).

But if Europa Report is too high-minded for you, there will be schlock gems like ThePower, Irish horror comedy Grabbers, and classic 1972 environmentalist thriller Silent Running to get you through the 4am finish line.

Don’t blink, and I’ll see you on the other side, companions.
