The Rex Complex has been revising the definition of eclectic for years, mostly at the Wednesday night residency at Precinct in Union Square. At their heart, The Complex is two main dudes, Rex Hussmann and drummer Jeremy Gustin, over the years inviting folks like Dave Sleinninger, Lyle Brewer, Nate Edgar, Mike Miksis and others. Their second album, A Delicious Victory, sees them tightening up their usual "roots ruckus" ways for the studio. The best example is lead single "Missing Pieces," which is a genuine three-and-a-half-minute pop jam. From a loose intro, they explode into a kind of Animal Collective bridge before going back to a cool, mellow delivery. "It’s a crumbled pie now," sings Hussman. "It’s a bumbled life," before heading back into their double-time delight. Guess all that time onstage—and helpful friends—paid off in spades.
THE REX COMPLEX CELEBRATES THIS RELEASE SAT 8.29.09 AT THE LIZARD LOUNGE.
