I had this dream that I was stranded on a desert island in the Pacific with four musicians. As I was trying to build rafts and resist the urge to talk to volleyballs, this band was goofing off, making instruments out of seashells and singing everything from operas to old standards (in several different languages, to boot). When one of them grabbed the saw I was using and started waving it around to make spooky howling noises, I decided to make a swim for it.
As long as you aren’t marooned with them, Fishtank Ensemble as a group of high-seas gypsies is an OK crew to have onboard. Their new album is an exhaustive journey across musical styles of different seas and centuries. There are ports where the stand-up bass and fiddle swing like a Prohibition-era speakeasy, and tumbling gyres where accordions and macabre sopranos glower like a pre-talkies adventure-movie soundtrack.
