Stripped-down tunes might prove to be the defining sound of the decade. The xx and Fleet Foxes certainly seem to think so. The aforementioned more importantly know what type of minimalism they play into: lovesick and rustic, respectively. So what happens when a bare-bones group enters a sort of musical limbo stuck between minimalist stations?

Enter Bones, Berlin-twosome Fenster’s promising (but vagrant) debut. The record starts off in a world of downtempo indie pop with the irresistible “Fantasy II” and burnt-out-Kim-Deal echoes of “White to Red.” By the time we get to “2.7 XO 17,” Bones has taken a turn towards an eerie, hipster haunted house sound, making the record feel more disjointed than cohesive. Not to say the more un-canny sounds don’t work—they do—but it’s vital to know what Fenster is all about, and what to expect from them in the future.
