UK Dubstep duo Nero performed their live set at House of Blues Tuesday night as part of Together 2012, with Mr. LA-Moombahton Dillon Francis opening. (“I love the Internet and pissing off your Mom and Dad … especially if their hippies” DF says on his Soundcloud, leading me to believe that he would probably hate me. Not that I care, considering I hate people with poor grammar: “they’re”).
Anyway, live vocalist Alana Watson, dressed entirely in black leather with her blonde hair waving from the red and blue lit smoke explosions behind her, sang live for chart-topping tracks like “Innocence” and “Guilt” from the edge of the stage. Meanwhile, Joseph Ray and Daniel Stephens manned the nobs atop their massive DJ set--commanding a sold out crowd of hundreds of kids losing their sh*t.
While dodging bros in neon sunglasses and 16-year-old-girls who scowled at me as I attempted to capture the insanity on my iphone and chuckled at the emotionless HOB bouncers standing face to face with a sea of waving appendages and bare stomachs …
as usual, Nero ignited an energy that filled the huge venue all the way to the high ceiling. And the energy was contagious.
Plus, due to the sheer vastness of the crowd, there were also a bunch of cool people there to dance with, including a surprise appearance by Dex Mutha Fukin Ter from UNregular Radio.
Looking out across the crowd during the downtempo, melodic hiatuses between deafening drops, and up at the balconies where every single arm in the room was swaying and one couple was dancing slowly, pressed against each other and moving in sync with the music without forcing their way towards the front (it really blows my mind when people stare at the DJ the whole time, it’s like, what are you waiting for them to do?),
the sight of so many kids at these electronic music events still blows me away every time.
Or maybe it was those giant drops. When the floor shook with the bass and the jumping kids almost knocked me over. Whatever… still got the video. This is a sight to behold:
