I don’t know where Black Olympia is, but it must be some pinnacle of power and honesty. Velah’s sound is simple, but huge.
Emotions run deep, and they run dark. “Glass Heart” is amazing—a snapshot of raw feeling in a haunting intro, like that stabbing feeling in your gut when you first realize that someone you love betrayed you. It’s the “Why?” Vocals so tender, but so strong, that they tug water from your eyes, while the heavy, driving drums give you strength. One of my favorite tracks, “Calm Down,” perfectly captures the strength of the album.
First you’re “Cold, fucked and on your own,” but then the chorus blazes through the dark in all it’s raw glory, blocking out the bullshit.
The album as a whole is a cathartic work, with its combination of haunting riffs and striking vocals so dense that it sticks with you long after you put down your headphones.
Velah burns with emotion.
