BORDERLANDS: DIRTY PROJECTORS’ “DANCE FOR YOU”

Dirty-Projectors

Dave Longstreth and his leading ladies release the second single from their July LP Swing Lo Magellan.

Late March gave us the first taste of what the Dirty Projectors have been working on since the release of their breakthrough album Bitte Orca in 2009. “Gun Has No Trigger,” the first single from their sixth studio album Swing Lo Magellan, due out July 10, features frontman Dave Longstreth singing over a sharp drum beat with the signature backing vocals of his two female band members Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian.

While the track clearly displayed powerful vocals from the trio, it lacked the flavorful experimental guitars that peppered the critically-acclaimed Bitte Orca so tastefully.

Longstreth recorded the new LP in an abandoned house in the woods of upstate New York and went on record claiming Swing Lo Magellan was inspired by none other than GPS systems.

It’s safe to say that the first single and atmosphere surrounding the release had me questioning their new direction. However, the second release from the project, “Dance for You,” has provided much needed reassurance.

The track is driven by a melodic guitar paired perfectly with Longstreth’s voice. For a man so worried about the direction (literally) society is headed, there is a quiet positivity in the track. “There is an answer, I haven’t found it, but I will keep dancing ’til I do,” he sings. The spare handclaps and percussion finally collide with a gorgeous arrangement of orchestral strings, and the track concludes with a sugary guitar solo. “Dance for You” has me hungrily awaiting Swing Lo Magellan, wondering what other surprises the band has in store.
