In the spirit of the warm summer weather, I’ve packed away my usual deep house and underground techno musings for the week in pursuit of a short, Boston-style reprieve. As a nearly seven year Boston resident who has withstood a massive West Coast exodus over the years, I have cultivated a profound sense of pride for the city in which I now call home.
I stand on the opposite side of the “Boston is lame” fight.
Slightly outdated? Sure. But the extraordinary creativity coursing through the city’s life-line is a maddening energy impossible to ignore.
This week’s artist, Brek. One, draws on this very energy to create an hour-plus homage to his hometown in conjunction with Karmaloop and Future Boston Alliance. Spanning everything from hip-hop to funk, rock to punk, Brek. One brings everything together under one “wickehhd” Boston-themed umbrella. As a mix that’s more about the vibe than a genre exploration, I encourage you to check out Bad Rabbits and Black El X Durkin: a crew of artists currently at the helm of Boston’s musical ingenuity. This mix may not please the seasoned ear so if you prefer something deeper, I suggest Soul Clap’s ode to Boston for XLR8R.
You can catch Brek. One alongside fellow Bostonites this Saturday at Royale for The Little Red Dress Party. Dress to impress, leave the Sox hat home for the night.
