IN THE MIX: MARTYN

“Former triangle player gone rogue.”

At this point everyone has moved into their apartments, started classes, rediscovered their “blackout” boundaries, or like myself, continued along their merry ways while tearfully watching summer slip away. In any event, it’s likely that you’re mentally, physically, and emotionally drained (and broke). So I offer you all a gift, from my headphones to yours.

Today’s mix comes from the decks of Dutch DJ/producer Martyn; a man known for embracing most genres that coexist under the electronic umbrella. His percussive grooves and staccato samples find a well-suited home on Flying Lotus‘s Brainfeeder Records while also establishing residency on his own 3024 Records (Julio Bashmore and Addison Groovelive here, too). Despite his varied sound, Martyn pays special attention to the shadows that dance between dubstep and techno, an ambiguous space with limitless creative avenues. I know what you’re thinking—and rest assured with the onset of a new school year, I will impart a fresh take on Dubstep 101 ASAP.

Until then: open your mind, listen to the beats and erase the senseless chatter (and chainsaws) you’ve heard in the past about the bass-loving genre.

You can get an early start on this semester’s bass curriculum with some of the best professors in town: the Bassic boys, who tonight are graciously welcoming Martyn into the Good Life basement. The music always goes deep and the subs are always thumping when Bassic controls Good Life, so be prepared to sweat and leave behind the week’s trials and tribulations. Welcome back students, we’ve missed you.
