I actually have to sit down after listening to this, so give me a second.
Ok, that’s better. Wow. This Allston eight-piece (yes, eight) have put together a debut LP that will confound and amaze. If there’s some sort of genre scale, this album fluctuates between math rock, americana, ska and doom metal. They call themselves “freak rock,” so when you hear that, assume it’s a mix of those aforementioned slices.
On “But Moooommmm,” there’s a punk-meets-metal guitar that relentlessly pummels you, until it doesn’t and there’s a jazzy interlude. Oh, plus some screaming and then maniacal laughter. “Huffin’ in the Nude,” is twangy and about what the title suggests, plus spluttered-out vocals.
It takes some musicians that really know what they’re doing to create something so disjointed that works so well.
This is a must-hear album, if for no other reason (although there are many reasons) than it’ll leave you baffled as to how exactly they pulled it off.
