PRETTY & NICE: GOLDEN RULES FOR GOLDEN PEOPLE

CD_PrettyAndNice

GENRE | HAPPY-GO-LUCKY GUITAR POP
VERDICT | GOOD, CLEAN FUN
LABEL | RORY RECORDS/EQUAL VISION RECORDS
RELEASE | 4.30.13

To anyone not yet acquainted with this quartet, the combination of band and album titles could lead you to believe the recording at hand is an audio collection of proper manners instructions by a group of finishing school teachers.

Luckily, this is not the case, so put your salad forks and table doilies away.

If the guys of Boston’s Pretty & Nice are about to teach you anything, it’s how to securely tie up your dancing shoes and bounce around like the jitterbug you were destined to become. Golden Rules opens up snappily and pretty much remains that way till the end, as the band balances bopping guitars and synth-y sounds. They often evoke Medieval imagery, with the monster slaying braggadocio in “Kill The Beast,” the marching beat in “New Czar,” and all that talk of stallions, mares, gold, and diamonds.

If nu-minstrelsy is a thing, these guys nailed it on the head.

Now they just need to incorporate a lyre with a sweet distortion pedal.
