Postmodern concept albums and hardcore punk are pretty much hand-in-hand these days, aren’t they? 2011’s unlikeliest album was David Comes To Life, a rip-roaring, metafictional rock opera from Torontonian bastards Fucked Up. In it, light-bulb-factory worker David Eliade falls in love with a beautiful revolutionary, they design a bomb to liberate the underclass, and tragedy strikes. Wracked with guilt, David’s salvation eventually comes when he realizes that he’s a character in a work of fiction, and that her death was not his fault, but the narrator’s.
