GENRE | DOG DAYS SOUNDTRACK
VERDICT | BASES LOADED
LABEL | CARPARK RECORDS
RELEASE | 6.4.13
(How old is he? Well, there’s a song on the album called “1993.”)
With individual tracks that start off sounding like Motown and British glam rock, plus two or three that could have The Strokes wondering
“Why the hell didn’t we think of that?,”
Empire certainly isn’t short on variety. Like the “Summer Days” that a song title references, however, the tunes on Empire are too few and over oh so quickly. Therefore, like summer, listeners must savor this album while it lasts, even though–unlike the summer–one can replay Empire after it’s over.
I’d hate to over-praise GRMLN’s first full-length release and thereby make its second LP seem to suffer by comparison. So let me just say that the next time Yoodoo Park steps up to the plate,
it will be with no outs and the bases loaded.
