MARATHON RELIEF: FAQ WITH THE NEWBURY ST. NURSE GIVING FREE B-12 SHOTS TO RUNNERS

NEEDLE

To thank Boston Marathon participants, the team at Delete Tattoo Removal & Laser Salon is hooking people up with complimentary B-12 boosts. All runners have to do is show a 2014 bib number and a valid ID, and they’re good to go. We asked the administering nurse, Elizabeth Schlesinger, to tell us about the process. Here are some key excerpts from our chat, which went down while we were getting a shot of our own.

NEEDLE ARM

According to Schlesinger …

We were trying to decide how to honor runners. Initially, we were going to do one of our nutrient IVs [for] the elite athlete and give all the proceeds to a charity … But we decided to do this to honor the runners …

Last year, after the marathon, we gave out free B-12s to runners, emergency workers …

It’s a small inter-muscular shot in either the upper arm or the butt …

It bruises less in the butt, and hurts less …

My repeat clients usually end up switching and doing it in the ‘glute,’ as we call it …

People come in all the time for it, usually once a week …

Mainly it’s an energy boost. It’s a water soluble vitamin, so your body takes and if you don’t need all of it, you’ll excrete it in your urine …

You can’t overdose on it. You’ll just pee it out. It’s 1-milliliter, so it’s a tiny amount. Most people will never excrete any of it because you don’t get a ton of B-12 in your regular diet …

It’s in certain foods, but a lot of time people take oral supplements. Oral supplements are fine–I never tell people to stop taking them, but anything you take orally loses a ton of its vitamin quality because it has to go through your gastrointestinal system and it also takes a lot longer to feel it. Because this is a shot that goes directly into your bloodstream, you get the boost of energy in an hour or so after the shot, depending on how depleted you are …

If you get it once a week, then you’re going to feel like you have more energy just because there’s a buildup. So if you come in and get it once, you’ll feel a boost of energy, but the benefits are greater as it builds up in your system …

It’s just a nice thing to do for the runners. They’re depleted … a lot of times they feel like crap … It helps get them back feeling good …

The shots have been around forever … You’ll talk to your grandmother and she’ll be like, ‘Oh, I used to get B-12 shots, you know, I was taking care of kids and I’d go to the doctor and say I felt lethargic, and they would give B-12 shots’ …

It’s a very sort of West Coast thing that they do a lot … People from California have been like, ‘Oh yeah, I used to get these.’ … On the East Coast, we’re a little bit slow in the health and beauty world. You can still go and get it at your doctor’s, but it’s easier to not have to make an appointment or pay a fee … It literally takes like two minutes.
