We could all use another convention, right? Maybe you didn’t have a whole weekend to spend in New York City for one of the two largest shows in the world! Or maybe you had an awesome time at the Boston Comic Con and, like many, feel they deserve more convention-ing this year because, obviously! This weekend, travel south for the biggest show in the smallest state, Rhode Island Comic Con on Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3. Here is what we are looking forward to this weekend.

Last November, the day my MacBook (white, 2007, RIP) literally up and died after Q from Star Trek touched it (a connection) we took in our first Rhode Island Comic Con. We met Xander, had an intimate panel experience with Thor mastermind Walter Simonson hosted by Forces of Geek’s Stefan Blitz, and delighted in the autumnal vibes of Downtown Providence over a deep dish pizza. This Saturday I aim to recreate those good vibes and see what RICC 2013 has to offer.

Like many conventions these days, the celebrity appearances often trump any comic news or artists appearing at the convention.

This convention is no exception. Last year we had the Batmobile from Batman ’66, this year, Batman himself Adam West (and Family Guy mayor of Quohog, RI) with faithful sidekick Robin Burt Ward are scheduled to appear. That’s not all, Bat-fans! Rounding out an almost unprecedented reunion of sorts is Catwoman Julie Newmar, who will knock you out with her cat-claws. Now that DC Comics is publishing a Batman ’66 series, I’m sure these stars will be signing a lot of comics with their likenesses this weekend–perhaps for the first time! Saturday, Stefan hosts a Bat-panel from 3pm-4:30pm in Room A.

The guest list is almost too impressive to list, adding from left field guest Grizzly Adams’ Dan Haggerty, to Danny Glover, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura), Sam Jones (Flash Gordon, Ted), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars, Batman, Colt 45).

One really could get lost staring at all of these celebrities but that’s what sells tickets these days. Your childhood fantasy comes true at other celebrity reunions at the Con.

Weekend at Bernie’s reunion with Andrew McCarthy. Check. Power Rangers Reunion with Jason David Frank. Yes, please!

Just announced: I will be moderating the all-important Weekend at Bernie’s reunion event, at 4:30pm Saturday in Room B, please tweet at me @claynferno any questions you may have for Mr. Terry Kiser (Bernie), Andrew McCarthy, Jonathan Silverman, Catherine Marie Stewart or C.Thomas Howell.

It might break your wallet/savings account/relationship if you decide to get a picture with every one of your favorite childhood actors, so please, pay attention to the signing fees at their respective tables.

For comics, artist’s alley will be chock full of talent, local an national of course. Iron Man’s Bob Layton was a pleasure to talk to at NYCC, and though he has no current Iron Man or Marvel plans, is ghostwriting on movies in Hollywood all the time!

Other guests include Spidey’s Alex Savuik, G.I. Joe’s Micheal Golden, Sarah Richard from My Little Pony, Punisher’s Mark Texiera, She-Hulk’s Renee Witterstaetter and more.

For cosplay, they’ve invited our favorite Batman, Matches Malone to the party, so you should dress up too!

  1. Kyla Kyla says:

If you didn’t go to RICC, consider yourself extremely lucky. The con organizers didn’t know what they were doing. They screwed the people with VIP tickets over immensely. The vendors were shown complete disrespect by not getting any real communication. There were problems with tickets that were not handled properly. The organizers tried to deflect EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM off of them and onto someone else, including the problems that were purely their fault. They completely hide all negative comments on their Facebook page, including the constructive ones, and ban users when they point out said problems. Instead of solving problems, they prefer to cover them up. It would have been fun, but really, you’d be better off saving your money and going to PAX East in 2015 instead. Totally not worth it, when even the people running the thing can’t get their crap together.
