Grab your wallets. The fourth annual Ladies Only! exhibition and sale at Pinkcomma Gallery in the South End is tonight (6-11pm). It’s bigger and better than ever, and featuring new and original work by over twenty female designers (many of them members of the Boston Design Salon) with works in a variety of sizes and mediums.
Each designer will present two to six pieces, with originals and editions available for sale. Some you can expect include Albertine Press, whose original note cards, journals, coasters and calendars are “lovingly hand-cranked, one piece at a time, on antique presses with modern artisinal style.” Family Dinner For One, out of Kingston, MA features hand-screened original t-shirts by husband/wife team Seth and Beth Marois. Flauxy is Jamaica Plain’s Keyse Angelo, and her sassy, colorful handmade jewelry combines interesting materials in size, shape, color and depth. From Fort Point find JHill Design with vibrant, multi-layered prints, and Bombay-born Seema Krish’s contemporary textiles that are environmentally and socially conscious. Medford handbag designer Laura Collins believes in creating cruelty-free designs, including the Bedford Falls Collection, her new line, which pays homage to her favorite black-and-white movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. Katie Rowley (Designs By Katie)’s warm illustrations are whimsical and playful. “I draw using the dropper tool from an India ink bottle on heavyweight watercolor paper. The splatters and drips are the natural result. All the writing on my drawings (captions and signatures) are made using ‘fingerprint writing’ – I draw one letter at a time backward on my finger and press it onto the page like a mini monoprint.”
