A man of bony stature lurks amidst a downtrodden landscape leaning in as he lights his cigarette. Flooded in an array of desolate dark teal tones, the only break in this moment and composition is hot pink light from his match and the club in the distance. Upon viewing this image, you immediately feel the situation without fully knowing the circumstances. It is a stark scene of simple, powerful tones and composition. This is what Tomer Hanuka excels at. He creates an environment in his pieces that engulf the viewer with a simple, beautiful palette that is just as graphic as it is sensual.
He is a conceptually powerful illustrator using contemporary mediums to their fullest and in turn creating vividly modern and swank work. Every piece leaves the viewer in awe. You are lead in with punchy colors, but you hang out soaking up organic linework and seductive moods. Hanuka experiments with hierarchy of his scenarios and manipulates layers of atmosphere to an extent that it’s clear why he’s nabbing every accolade available and Upper Playground has put out this collection.
