STUDENTS AGAINST T CUTS RALLY TODAY

Various activist groups will ride the T into Copley station today, Feb. 13, in a rally against MBTA fare proposals preceding a public hearing at 6 p.m. at the Boston Public Library.

According to Occupy Boston, groups in different areas will meet at the following times:

• Occupy Boston will meet at Downtown Crossing at 3:00 PM.
• Occupy Somerville will ride the rails in from Davis Square at both 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
• Occupy Dorchester will meet at Fields Corner at 3:45 PM.
• Occupy Quincy will be leaving at the Quincy Center T station at 3:30 PM.
•  Occupy JP and Occupemos El Barrio are planning similar actions; check back here or contact your local Occupy for meeting times and locations.
• Students Against the T Cuts will meet at the Boylston T Stop at 4:00 PM.

The MBTA has been attacked for two proposals introduced earlier this year: one that would raise fares an average of 43 percent, with the biggest hits to elders and riders with disabilities and another that would only raise fares by 34 percent, but at a much higher service cut. Facing a $160 million deficit, the MBTA will make a final approval in April and changes in services would be implemented in July.

Last Thursday, General Manager Jonathan Davis, met with 34 lawmakers at the State house to discuss the proposals, according to the State House News Service (SHNS).

Though the meeting did not offer many solutions, Davis told Rep. Carl Sciortino of Medford, that there was some flexibility to “undo any of its budget decisions if the Legislature offered a lifeline later in the year,” as reported by the SHNS.
