Technology + music + a transformational exhibition = Amalgamate.
“It’s truly about sound and experience. We store a great deal of energy in our daily lives and electronic music really provides a release,” says Alexis Avedisian, curator of this year’s exhibition at Together fest.
“I became really inspired during last year’s Together Festival, especially after seeing the Amalgamate installation at Yes Oui Si Gallery,” explains Alexis Avedisian, curator of this year’s exhibition.
“It’s truly about sound and experience. We store a great deal of energy in our daily lives and electronic music really provides a release.”
“Art and technology are parallel,” she continues. “Technology is a huge aspect in our daily lives, something we consume so regularly without even thinking. Experiencing art could be as simple as noticing what is beautiful (or grotesque). Electronic music culminates the joining together of logic influences and self-reflective art.”
The week-long, multi-location exhibition transforms as the festival progresses. “At Mobius, we start out with Joey Asal’s rigid and minimalist sculptures and midweek get more high-tech and interactive with Derek Hoffend’s work (pictured below). Amalgamate ends with Egan Budd’s team, and their pieces incorporating sound/body manipulation. It reflects all the feelings of energy consumption and release I wanted to convey.”
Amalgamate also features an off-site live performance—called “Camoland”—with Vela Phelan and Jeff Huckleberry on April 7. “It’s in a pop-up space next to the All Asia in Central Square. The pair will turn the building into an interactive installation site, incorporating sound, projection and installation as part of their performance.” Meanwhile, at Mobius, Amalgamate also hosts two sets of Xyphoid Dementia and Derek Hoffend.
“Together has built an environment that allows for musical and emotional changes throughout.
People attending Together will experience these as the festival evolves and I wanted the art aspect of the festival to reflect these changes.
“None of these artists/artist teams have worked together before. As a curator, it’s exciting to bring artists together that typically wouldn’t show together.”
