NOESIS: SPEAKING IN TONGUES

(via odynia)

Pick your pressure: your boss, your government, your wallet, your inability to be thin, beautiful, successful, loved, or worshiped. Lack of passion? Perpetual lethargy? We all have pressures; some more than others. But that thing called mainstream society (I think it’s real?) tells us subliminally every day that the things we NEED are apparently ripe and in abundance if we stay on the RIGHT track. What happens if we veer off? Does that embedded illusion of THE PERFECT LIFE go away, or do we just ignore those we think have claimed it? Furthering segregation and thickening the wall that blocks all expression and visible vulnerability…

Maybe the crazy extreme Christians are #DoingItRight when they get together in groups and chant incoherently. GLOSSOLALIA, aka speaking in tongues, is what happens when your body is taken over by the spirit of the Holy Ghost, causing you to speak in the language of the gods. This sounds really awesome, but really just looks like a bunch of people watching a bunch of other people have seizures. Regardless, they seriously don’t give a fuck, and this kind of spiritual overtaking and sweeping rush of pure, liberating ecstasy might be exactly what we need to get by.

Using glossolalia as a metaphorical umbrella, Maria Molteni, performance artist and current resident at SOWA’s Samson Projects, thinks that Boston

“Needs to get a little crazy.”

Her upcoming exhibition, organized in collaboration with Ethan Kiermaier of White Walls, will definitely be insane. The White Walls project is literally a 26-foot U-Haul truck rented for one day, which roams around the city and stops at whim. Its title is antagonistic to its mission, understanding that art doesn’t need white walls to revivify, but instead, thrives on the ability to spontaneously engrain itself within the public sphere; rooted deeply to human curiosity and our need to experience. Molteni and Kiermaier are using the U-Haul (in this case, the U-SAVE!) to host 23 artists over a 24-hour period, with dozens of performances at each stop.

“I’ve asked performers to consider this context and express themselves however they see fit,” Molteni says, while audience members are encouraged to participate open-mic style. She continues,

“Frustrations with what seem to be greater powers, whether federal, supernatural or environmental, are building and we desperately need a revival. This day should celebrate experimentation, exorcism, and regeneration.”

Participating in the event are BATHAUS + MAGZILLA, the ambient electronic-meets-hip-hop soul-sisters, who will create what Molteni calls “sound and movement pieces, which work towards a new religion.” Alice Vogler, whose work deals with rituals of healing, has “plans to exchange private for public medical information.” Molteni herself will be recreating the Baptism of the #RESURRECTED Saint Aurelian somewhere near the ICA’s waterfront.

Again: 26-feet, 24-hours, 23 artists. Entirely improvisational.
