Performance artist and curator, Vela Phelan, has been thinking on this wavelength all winter. His upcoming exhibition, NEAR DEATH: PERFORMANCE ART EXPERIENCE, will be hosted at Fourth Wall Project February 2nd-3rd, and will include performance works by regional, national and international artists, such as: Jeff Huckleberry, Faith Johnson, Gustavo Alvarez, Travis McCoyFuller, Marilyn Arsem and Jamie McMurry. Using the concepts put forth by Phelan, stating “DEATH IS THE BODY AND LIFE IS TIME,” artists will use their actions to symbolize relationships between their present existence and the inevitable issues of mortality.
“At its core, performance is the least commercial, profitable, and archival form of art,”
Phelan says in his Kickstarter video. “Performance artists are rarely paid for travel, materials, time or their actual work.” Backing this Kickstarter project will help fund airfare for traveling artists, provide stipends for each performer, and supply materials to DEAD ART STAR, who will be making a series of polaroids during the exhibition. Mid-level donors receive NDPAE stickers and T-Shirts (featuring a skull design by Raul Gonzalez), while high-level donors can grab one of the polaroids, signed by the artist.
