Comedian Craig Shoemaker—also known as the Lovemaster—is all about the healing powers of laughter. As in, he started a foundation called Laughter Heals.
Oh, and he truly believes he reversed the Curse of the Bambino.
So, you’re coming to Boston on Valentines Day?
Yep. What better way to spend the holiday than with the Lovemaster? You know, I don’t see why more people don’t go out to see comedy. That’s what’s gonna sustain your relationship more than anything! The rear-end goes, everything goes with gravity, except for comedy. Comedy is #1.
Is there going to be new Lovemaster material for this show?
Well, Lovemaster is just one part of it all, something that I’m known for. It’s like “Born to Run” for Springsteen.
Except for me, the melody’s always the same, but I get to rewrite the lyrics.
You founded an organization called Laughter Heals in 2002.
Yeah, I’m really into the healing powers of laughter. I believe it can help people find new direction and energy. Like this one lady with cancer wrote this piece called “The Ten Advantages of Being Bald,” which I thought was a wonderful way to address the hideous beast of cancer.

Is there anything you’d like to let the city of Boston know before you arrive?
… One of my good friends is Johnny Damon, and when he was playing centerfield in 2004 for the Red Sox, I called [him] up when they were down 0-3 to the Yankees, and I told Johnny to watch my DVD. Which they did—and they never lost again.
They beat the Yankees and then swept the Cardinals in the World Series … Owners change, players change, everything changes except the energy throughout the fans. You can literally ship that energy through laughter, so the Sox just goofed around the entire process. They stopped taking it so seriously and subjected themselves to the fear.
And that is what reversed the Curse of the Bambino.
