When you hear Vibra-slap in the first 15 seconds of a local disc, you know you’re headed into deep waters. Comanchero take us in way over our heads. Intelligent lyrics and slick production lace the arrangements and tie the mando, banjo and 3-part harmonies together with bailing wire. The disc struggles with its own identity, though, pitting a more rootsy edge against its funkier side. When they play it gritty, the band recalls the twangier sound of the ’70s (think America).
