Snap-happy photographer-about-town Kelly Davidson is known for her kinetic concert images and keen eye for capturing poignant moments on film. Back in 2005, Davidson started shooting for Rock ’n’ Roll Parents, her photo series that highlights the loving relationships you don’t normally see onstage with Boston’s favorite talent.
WHAT’S THE SCARIEST THING ABOUT SHOOTING BABIES? (WITH YOUR CAMERA, I MEAN.)
I get nervous when they start jumping up and down and get hyper because sometimes they’re close I feel like I’m going to impale them in the head with my camera gear.
HOW HAS ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PARENTS GROWN AS A PROJECT?
I passed the idea by a few of the Boston musicians I knew who had kids, like Paul Buckley [of Orbit] and Tanya Donnelly [formerly of Belly], to see if there was any interest in it, and they were very excited. They put me in touch with a whole bunch of other rock stars with kids. Now, I’m showing the fourth Rock ‘n’ Roll Parents, and I’m going to begin working on Rock ‘n’ Roll Parents 5 in the new year.
WHICH ROCK AND ROLL CHILD IS DEFINITELY GONNA TAKE AFTER THEIR PARENTS AND GROW INTO A ROCK STAR?
Tanya’s daughter, definitely—she had a daisy guitar during the photo shoot. Dennis Brennan’s son, Jake, was in it, who’s already a musician, so there were two generations of musicians in that shot.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE ON A ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PARENTS SHOOT?
I photographed Munk and his two kids and their dog. His daughter was in diapers at the time. She was so excited that I was coming and kept asking for me, and then when I got there she was so disinterested! She kept running around outside and out of the frame. Sometimes the kids ask me to stay for dinner, which is always cute.
WILL THIS TURN INTO MORE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL EXHIBITS?
People keep asking me to do Rock ‘n’ Roll Pets, but that would mean I’d be taking photos of … everyone.
