GLOWING IN THE DARKEST NIGHT
GENRE | BRAP STEP
VERDICT | FUTURE IZ NAO
LABEL | PRETTY LIGHTS MUSIC
RELEASE | 10.22.10
Pretty Lights is managing the music game well. He’s right on point with the most current sounds (sampler-based, bass-heavy electro), he’s hit the coolest music festivals (Bonaroo, Bisco, Ultra, etc.) and this year, he released three EPs via his website.
“Drift Away” is the most fun—an easy-listening vocal snippet dropped into a cavernous subwoofer rattling to infinity. “Still Night” is a bit too Moby “sample a dead blues guy,” but it still leads off the EP with some savage head-nodding. In reality just one dude (Derek Vincent Smith), Pretty Lights can do so much with so little, which is a tribute to the man’s talent. His allegiance to the post-rave scene is starting to pay dividends, and hopefully it comes in the form of many donations for his music. For musicians, playing live pays the rent, but the tunes buy the curtains.
PRETTY LIGHTS PLAY THE HOUSE OF BLUES ON FRI 11.5.10.
