ARTIST | REV. JOHNNY L JONES
ALBUM | THE HURRICANE THAT HIT ATLANTA
GENRE | WHOLE LOTTA SOUL
VERDICT | LOW-FI LOVING THE LORD
LABEL | DUST TO DIGITAL
RELEASE | 11.22.2010
Rural Georgia preacher Jones has been swaying congregations since the late 50s with distorted guitars, walking bass, clapping choirs, pew stomping, & beleaguered microphones overdriven with the fury of his faith. Excerpts from his radio show which include ads for funeral homes, calls with parishioners, rave-up songs full of feedback, sermons- the full experience, including some electrifying performances by ladies in the congregation.
Partial tracklisting: Introducing the Hurricane, Sit At the Welcome Table, I Got Drunk for the Lord/Train Is Moving On, Troy’s Supermarket, Yes to Jesus Christ, Devil Don’t Understand Moanin, and Lay Your Hands on Me Jesus.
ARTIST | SEXUAL MILKSHAKE
ALBUM | SING ALONG IN HEBREW
GENRE | VERY DISTINCT
VERDICT | SEX + MILKSHAKE, YEAH!
LABEL | TEENBEAT
RELEASE | 1992 AND 2010
Early 90s band which made life more drug-soaked at James Madison University in VA. Messy blats of rock scuzz, in-jokes, half-assed psychedelia, a track of blank vinyl crackling, an Ultimate Spinach cover, and even the results of submitting a song poem. Very Destroy All Monsters, & so appropriately comes with a package that features a newspaper, a mask, 3D glasses, glitter, matches, buttons & assorted trashy stuffs. Now reissued (!) with all packaging intact. Mostly led by psychotronically-minded singer Greg Allen. Drummer went on to be in Blast Off Country Style.
Partial tracklisting: Mating Call of the Microchimp, L’Autore de L’Age du Meutre en Masse, Hip Death Goddess, Unicorn, Peanutz, Bargaining with the Bubblebot, and Cave Bacon Vol. 3.
ARTIST | HASIL ADKINS
ALBUM | WHITE LIGHT / WHITE MEAT
GENRE | COUNTRY FRIED CHICKEN
VERDICT | THE BEST MEAT
LABEL | NORTON
RELEASE | 7.13.2010
Yes baby, you can have peanut butter AND chicken on your hot dog. The one and only huncher who whipped up amateur monster makeup looks in his spare time away from his gloriously mangled home-recordings of rockabilly. A greatest hits that’s collected with the same kind of obsessive care that Haze’s neighbor Jesco White put into boot polishing. Folkways style jacket & easily the best (and best-earned) title of a record in 2010.
Partial tracklisting: Roll Roll Train, Woke Up This Morning, So Tell Me Darlin, Hot Dog Baby, Come On And Do The Shake With Me, Turn My Coat Tails Loose, Donnio Boogie, Tomorrow You’re Gone, Somebody Help Me, You’re Gonna Break My Heart, Lonely Graveyard, You Don’t Love Me, Donnio Shuffle.
