I’ve always been partial to The Lights Out. Their classic rock with a modern twist was my first taste of the Boston music scene when I moved here. Last year’s Color Machine exemplified this perfectly—I couldn’t listen to the opening riff for “Count Me Out” without getting chills down my spine (and still can’t, for that matter). I absolutely cherished that record, so their follow-up begs the question: What direction will TLO go in? Well, calm down—while the frenzied energy isn’t as palpable, smoother and more polished songs take flight on Primetime.
Frontman Rishava Green gets downright sultry on “Having it All,” and even manages to soulfully sulk in scorn on the dangerous “Mamacita.” Tracks like “Interstellar Valentine” let us sneak a glimpse into The Lights Out that we know and love, but their latest release proves that the foursome wears luster quite well.
