GENRE | SUPER-SPASTIC POST-PUNK
VERDICT | EMBRACE THE ODD
LABEL | YOUNG CUB RECORDS
RELEASE | 2.19.11
Where to begin with this hyper-caffeinated duo? They’re weird, but let’s not let that obscure the fact that they’re also pretty awesome. Comprised of frontman Rex Hussmann and drummer Jeremy Gustin, The Rex Complex’s recent release places them somewhere between MGMT and Beastie Boys. But even that characterization doesn’t completely do them justice. There’s a definite post-punk edge to their sound—mixed with barking vocals, pounding drums, amplified distortion and funky grooves.
“Set Go” opens on Hussmann’s animalistic howling, and backing accordions have never felt so punk rock. “Clarence Carter” features a mix of Gustin on bongos and Hussmann’s guitar switching back and forth between surf-rock riffs and indecipherable distortion. It’s a weird dynamic that ranges from gypsy music to rap-punk and everything in between. And what’s even weirder? It works.
