The move to a major label has finally sunk in for Death Cab for Cutie’s frontman—(and the lucky, lucky husband of Zooey Deschanel)—Ben Gibbard. His career has been going strong through multiple releases and national tours over the course of a decade, but for the first time, we find him unabashedly in an optimistic corner, which in turn makes for radio-friendly fare and a promising lead into the band’s new work.

Lead single “You Are A Tourist” sheds insight to the overall sound of the album—upbeat synthy simplicity. Ever palpable is the unmatchable songwriting ability Gibbard unleashes on Keys, which climaxes at “Some Boys,” and he still has that distinctive vocal presence that reigns over piss poor imitators (fuck off, Owl City). Codes and Keys is the perfect album for devoted Cutie fans, or anyone who just wants to enjoy the hell out of summer.
