Faces on Film has found a way to cover a broad range of contemporary folk styles—from highway tunage like “A Hundred on the Hill”, to swampy blues evolutions in “Knot in the Vine”—while making them all sound like his own. On the whole, Some Weather is a lot like watching the big storm clouds roll past. But they never quite unleash a torrent, so you’re left to contemplate their shapes and wonder where the real raindrops will hit.
That is, there’s plenty to make you ponder on this record, its warmly reverb-ed vocals and disarming minimalism for example, but the lightning never really strikes and it is, finally, a meandering through alt-folk styles with no high or low point.
Like real faces on film, this is easy to admire, easy to recognize and yet almost as easy to forget.
