When listening to The Field’s third album, one thing becomes clear almost immediately:
This is the single most aptly named album in human history.
Why?
Because the entire album is composed of loops, loops and even more loops. Stretching out over well beyond an hour, it’s easy to get lost in its ever-twisting mire. The sounds range from the rich and dense to the sparse and cold. “Sweet Slow Baby” may recall some of the more droney shoegaze out there—until it doesn’t. Melodies come and go and come back again, shifting endlessly like an aural kaleidoscope. Even mammoth, 10-minute long songs like “Arpeggiated Love” seem to go by quick as a radio-ready pop song.
Something not quite ambient, not quite techno and not quite normal, Looping State of Mind is cool, weird and arresting.
