The squeaky, squawky noise genre is seldom a place for the Average Joe/Josephine. Noise in the Top 40? Don’t count on it. But Brooklynites Pterodactyl might have found a sweet-spot on Spills Out, their third disc offering equal parts noise and melody for an adventurous listen.
Pterodactyl mirrors the whirly-swirly group vocals of Animal Collective and injects some much-needed guitar and drums.
“School Glue” and “Aphasia” brim with color but never go overboard, staying grounded enough with their driving guitar to make it an audible made-out-of-clouds roller coaster. Instrumentals “Spills In” and “Spills Out” are another great facet, letting the listener catch their breath with some shiny, weightlessness-inducing synths. So, if you’ve never met noise-rock, let Spills Out make the introduction. Its bright, gutsy nature will take you for a trip but won’t leave you behind.
