One of the first reviews I wrote for the Dig was of Kingsley Flood’s Dust Windows, the 2010 release that I liked but railed on because Naseem Khuri sounded too much like Dylan or something. A couple of lineup changes and approximately 9,129,568 miles on the band van odometer later, Kingsley Flood is a very different animal on Colder Still than they were on Dust Windows. The wise-beyond-their-years lyrics and plucky melodies are ever present, but
the Flood’s become a well-oiled machine that somehow controls the immense amount of auricular chaos it produces between six members.
Take “Wonderland,” for instance—an eclectic bouquet of grit and grace, with the plumes of harmonies and fiddle lines holding their own against thorny verses set at a frenzied pace. This is what happens when you throw a handful of people together who can lose their shit on a Salvation Army guitar and a drum kit in equal measure, and instead of self-imploding, it works.
