I had a voice teacher once who doled out the best advice I’ve ever received: “When it comes to art—da Vinci, Picasso, Leonard Bernstein, whoever—those who learn the rules and technique of their craft well learn how to break them well, too. Learn the rules, learn how to do something right, and then do it wrong on your own accord. That’s where genius comes from.”
When you’ve got an album as eclectic, inventive and yet comfortably familiar as No One Knows What Happens Next from Hallelujah the Hills, that’s when this “learn the rules to break ‘em your own way” thing is best exemplified. Here, we have thoughtful storytelling set to beautiful melodies incorporating elements we don’t expect, like trumpet flares on Western dirges (“Dead People’s Music”) and the marriage of conflicting time signatures (“Nightingale Lightning”). This is thinking outside the box with a lot of moving parts, but sonically, it comes together gorgeously in a start-to-finish listen.
