Just one week ago, Matt Skiba and the Sekrets performed their debut show in Chicago at the Metro. This hometown show garnered much hype and excitement, but ultimately brought heavy heat for Skiba, as the stint didn’t go as planned. There have been some nasty reviews of how the crowd reacted. There were a lot of early exits.
This past Tuesday night Skiba, also famously of Alkaline Trio, came through town with his newest musical endeavor and fellow Chicago natives, the Smoking Popes. The two groups performed at the Middle East Club, downstairs. The Popes went through some beloved hits, setting the bar high for the Sekrets. Once Skiba and the new crew were up, I can thankfully say they’d gotten their shit together. They took the stage with purpose and the confidence of a weathered group; despite the heavy, hot feathered clothing.
The crowd loved every minute of it, singing, dancing and chanting cultishly.
