We’re fairly jealous of the talented, Grammy-nominated artist Ledisi—both ’cause she’s, you know, a talented Grammy-nominated artist (at the Wilbur tonight), and ’cause her name means “to bring forth” in Nigerian. That kicks the shit out of Judeo-Christian nomenclature. (Matthew—“God’s gift.” Chris—“Christ-bearer.” Elizabeth—“consecrated to God.” Mary—“you know this ‘God’ guy? Pretty neat.”) And, without getting too blasphemous, we think her fusion of rap, R&B and soul approaches the spiritual sublime more than naming some kid “Jehovah’s Bestie.”
Okay, a pinch blasphemous there.
