Muthaf-ckin eXquire’s in Town, Huzzah!
It’s hard to look at rap charts these days without cringing. Soulja Boy still exists and the wheelchair guy from Degrassi occupies the Top 10 on a regular basis. Mainstream rap has been on a downward spiral for years now, but all is not lost. The underground scene is thriving.
Allow me to direct your attention to Exhibit A: Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire.
Peers like Danny Brown compare eXquire to Biggie. Critics liken his complex, drunken flow to that of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man and MF Doom. Fact is, no comparison is quite adequate because Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire has his own thing going. He’s raunchy, self-deprecating, and paradoxically hard as shit and hilarious at once — the appeal is undeniable.
“Drunk driving on a Wednesday / with three bitches in an mpv.” That’s the opening hook of “Huzzah,” the masterwork that is eXquire’s coming out single, on which his unique style and lyrical prowess come out especially strong. “Publicist asks me whats my gimmick, I say ‘going in’” -- one example of a line that reads like a tongue twister, but sounds baby smooth coming out of MFN’s karat-filled mouth. Delivery aside, the lyric tells you everything you need to know about eXquire.
He’s gimmick free and goes in hard.
The low budget video for “Huzzah” essentially launched eXquire’s career. Shot for $400 in the Brooklyn apartment where he grew up, the video is charming in its authenticity. The concept is “party at eXquire’s house,” and he insists that you could witness a similar scene at his crib on any given day of the week. This is the place where, as he so eloquently explains in an interview with MTV:
“We do wild shit in here, we play video games, we fuck bitches, we color.”
“Huzzah” blew up last September and the slew of releases between then and now have rocketed eXquire into underground rap stardom. A remix of “Huzzah” appeared on a December mixtape called “Merry eXmas and Suck My Dick”. The track features Das Racist, El-P, Despot, and Danny Brown, and effectively solidified eXquire amongst the underground elite.
Though eXquire still lives in his original Crown Heights apartment, he is indeed moving up in the world. The music video for the “Huzzah” remix has markedly improved production quality, while maintaining just as many asses as the original.
This time, however, the asses are being finger painted on.
Despite such antics and the middle name ‘Muthafuckin’, eXquire was recently signed to Universal Records. I’m excited to see what he does with a big label video budget. And I’m not saying that just because of the ass painting. You should see the man’s tumblr (if you aren’t at work). It bodes well for music videos of the future (if you like strippers).
Back in the present, Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire is on tour with producer El-P. The “Into The Wild Tour” conveniently stops at the Paradise in Boston this evening, thanks to Karmaloop.
Our fair city, not known for its raucous rap shows, will likely never see eXquire again, so get him while he’s hot.
