He’s got a marathon weekend. During the Olympics. #waitwhat
Thanks to the Olympics opening ceremony last week, I doubt anyone is questioning the importance of England. They’ve produced, shared and conquered nearly everything and everyone and hell, without the help of Mr. Berners-Lee, you’d be staring into the abyss of an empty white box. Yes, we definitely love England (and Phelps, just because, thanks to him, bong rips and gold medals are officially fair game).
Aside from nursery rhymes, Harry Potter and a love story revolving around a lost cell phone, England has been steering the helm of underground electronic music long before the term “dubstep” was recognized in American vernacular. This week’s mix comes from the decks of an artist born on US soil who made the trek across the pond to cultivate a distinctive sound amassed with that UK grit. Andre Lira, AKA Doctor Jeep, is riding the crest of a new wave of talent. As a founding member of Banana Peel Records with a growing laundry list of accolades, Lira has a savoir faire that becomes increasingly evident during his eclectic, yet thoughtful, sets.
doctor jeep & obey city – dem hoes by doctor jeep
His recent mix for Mmmmaven is a generous blend of techno and upbeat house with a culturally rich undertone flowing throughout. There’s something intelligent bubbling to the surface, which is an instant distinction from every other kid with Serato. I recently saw Doctor Jeep open for Machinedrum, and I was struck by his selfless yet commanding presence, which translates through this mix. He draws from a diverse palette of artists while his own, original tracks punctuate and anchor the tone. His own explanation of his sound is “a style somewhere between the tropical inclinations of Dutty Artz and the grinding 808 electro of Swamp81,” so take from that what you will. Moral of the story is Doctor Jeep is in town and is dominating this weekend with a double-header starting tonight at Rise and followed by Saturday night at Machine for Music Ecology‘s Genesis. Basically, there’s no excuse to miss him since you have a choice of nights. Pick one OR go broke (or go home) and champion both nights (the Phelps choice). I am now officially out of sports talk, so come find me at the subwoofer.
