Call it fate—or a demonstration of the advantages of social media—that has brought drone-metal pioneers Sunn O))) back to Boston after nearly six years.
About a month back, Sunn O))) guitarist Stephen O’Malley tweeted that the band was having difficulty finding a Boston venue to add to their East Coast Tour. Joey, a friend of ours at the Dig, and his friend Chris tweeted back offering to book them a show in the Bean.
Once specs and technicalities were taken care of—that included drafting a laborious proposal to the Brookline Fire Department for a permit to use fog machines at the performance—Sunn O))) (which consists of O’Malley, guitarist Greg Anderson and vocalist Atilla Csihar of Mayhem) officially added the September 4th date to their tour route. Tickets sold out in just over a week.
It may strike one as a bit ironic that possibly the loudest live band ever in all their black-robed glory will be performing at Brookline’s prized depression-era landmark, the Coolidge Corner Theatre.
However, it speaks to the broad audience that Sunn O))) attracts and applauds their avant-garde approach to the doom-metal genre—it’s gonna be pretty fucking wild.
And either way, O’Malley doesn’t seem to pay it any mind—only the fact that his set will not follow a celluloid favorite. “The only problem with this picture is that it makes us wish it was a double feature with Jaws…,” He said on his blog referring to a photo of the Coolidge’s marquee.
If you’re lucky enough to have scored a ticket, expect shrieking Moog synthesizers, growling distortion at rib-cage-rattling decibels, and one of the most unexpected of the year.
