Dreaming of Paris.
There’s something about the New England autumn air that sends my psyche on a serious beauty-bender. It’s in these times that my hunger for textures and diverse sounds and imagery becomes utterly insatiable to the point where I become a sensory fiend. In light of this typically fall Friday, I share with you a mix from Ivan Smagghe, a producer who is no stranger to aesthetic, hailing from the motherland of all beauty-benders: Paris.
Smagghe has been a regular fixture in the global club circuit for years now, operating under a series of monikers and projects including: “It’s a Fine Line,” “Kill The DJ,” and “RMVN”. Throughout his time both in and out of the studio, one thing has been made clear: Smagghe is the real deal. His production boasts a polished and refined sound that’s overflowing with explosive passion and cut with raw edges. This very anomaly is what is known throughout the industry as the “it” factor, as in “it” cannot be taught.
You either have it, or you don’t.
Smagghe’s podcast for Resident Advisor leaves no room for question. He clearly has it. This particular electro-house journey is a subtle yet sexy outpouring that raises eyebrows and incites interest from across a smoky room. Between the dark yet steady bassline and the seductive musings of a purring vocalist, Smagghe infuses his sound with a mystique and sex appeal that only a Parisian can do. It’s almost so smooth that it hurts, in a “that feels good” kind of way. Indulge your inner Parisian tonight when Social Studies brings Ivan down to the Good Life, where you know the room will be vibrating. Come get it while the air is still alive.
