The Yoni Gordon Orchestra is not an easy band to define, apart from the obvious cop-out of calling them “fun.” Journalistic integrity aside however, that is exactly what this band is, a swaggering bag-full of fun, balls-out rock and roll. Falling somewhere between the howling new wave of early Elvis Costello and the optimistic punk sensibilities of Billy Bragg with a touch of soul tossed in for that extra zesty musical flavor,
Yoni Gordon Orchestra is made-up of a bunch of Boston ex-pats now living in Brooklyn, including former members of The Diamond Mines and Eli “Paperboy” Reed’s band, and of course the man himself, Yoni Gordon.
Gordon’s personal sound might be compared to Roy Orbison, Tom Waits and Jonathan Richman taking a road trip together through the southwest. Sounds pretty fuckin’ good, right? Then you’d be a damnable fool to miss this band’s homecoming to the Boston area on Friday, the 26th at T.T. the Bear’s as they promote their new album, The Hard Way.
Reminisce about how good the Boston music scene once was, and then be bitter about how Brooklyn is the reason why we can’t have nice things.
But most of all, listen to some straight-up good music.
