REVIEW: MENOMENA @ BRIGHTON MUSIC HALL

menomenafeat

Menomena had no problem drawing a crowd when they played on Saturday at the Brighton Music Hall,

their first Boston show they’ve played as a duo following the departure of Brent Knopf. Backed up by a moderately strong touring band, drummer Danny Seim and bassist, guitarist, and saxophone player Justin Harris played a selection of songs both old and new.

Material off recently released Moms shows the new Menomena;

a more focused, upbeat, and accessible sound that’s still laced with trademark instrumental oddities.

Their sound hasn’t significantly shifted from what it was in previous releases however the lineup change has definitely left it’s mark.

It’s easy to hear and see the progression of Menomena as a band; Harris and Seim are getting older and their style is getting tighter and more well rehearsed. Simultaneously their fan base is getting younger and their music is being devoured by a new fanbase. When watching Harris jump between multiple instruments and seamlessly navigate his way through a complex system of over a dozen pedals and foot pianos,

there’s no doubt that Menomena is still as creative and experimental as ever.
