Giving a shit. Sociologist Mark Warren thinks you should really look into it. He even wrote a book about it, Fire in the Heart, which he’ll be discussing over at the Harvard Book Store this evening. The specific kind of shit that Warren will be advocating the generous giving of will be racial justice, and even more specifically, the myriad of reasons why even the lilies of the lily-white have much to gain through offer up their fecal matter on the subject. Because it’s kinda worth a crap or two, honestly. Warren can put it a lot purtier than we can, though.

Now entering its fifth year, this big top of actively active activists once again sets up its people’s court of brass, woodwind and zeal in Davis Square. Ensemble groups from across the country have packed their trumpets and lugged their tubas to Somerville, obeying the beck and call of some mysterious summoning that only people who have more fun than you can hear. With no distinction between performer and audience, everyone is encouraged to join in on this celebration of noise and noisemakers … if not downright compelled.
