Southern-fried Gothic duo The Handsome Family, spookifyin’ the Rosebud stage this evening, isn’t Gothic in the “eye-shadow and spiky-wristband” sense of the word, but rather the “blood-stained bluegrass and murder ballad” interpretation. You know, “thunder broke the heavens above the flaming plantation,” “the naked widow McClintock rode half-mad at midnight” “hark, the moonshine still done broke,” that sort of thing. Plus, they’re totally married, so they’re definitely working the American Gothic angle a tad. Not bad. Short of an Age of Empires reference, they pretty much got all the good kinds of Goth covered.
