MIIKE SNOW @ HOUSE OF BLUES

Brother Ali, a challenger appears! In contention for whitest conceivable act at whitest conceivable venue is Swedish indietronica trio Miike Snow also playing at the House of Blues. Consisting of two childhood friends from Gothenburg whose musical résumés run the gamut from impressive (a European tour with the Fugees!) to still impressive but slightly shameful (they helped write Britney Spears’ “Toxic”!) and an unflappable New Yorker who has literally spent most of his adult life fronting bands, Snow has exactly the sound you’d expect from three extremely talented and accomplished individuals just doing what they love: a good one. SEMI-PRECIOUS WEAPONS @ ROYAL

Semi-Precious Weapons will be playing at Royale tonight. They will be performing the music that got them to open for Lady Gaga on tour. If you like their music, you should go and see them play it. Singer Justin Tranter will be singing the songs that he has written. While he is singing, Tranter will act in an outrageous fashion meant to evoke the unaffected trashiness of ’80s glam-rock excess back in its champagne jacuzzi heyday, while layering on an acid-washed filter of the ’90s heroin chic. Tranter’s fans just turned 17, so they probably read about these things on Wikipedia. Tranter probably wrote the articles himself. Good for him. BROTHER ALI @ HOUSE OF BLUES

Middle-American rapper Brother Ali has been known to poke fun at his coverage in the media and its frequent reliance on his albinism as a cheap hook to generate interest without delving into his complex lyricism or his deeply held political convictio—oh, shit. Sorry, Ali. Our b. The thoughtful Wisconsinite behind “Uncle Sam Goddamn (Kill America Version)” and “Bitchslap!” comes to the House of Blues as part of the “Like a Surgeon Tour.” An albino at the House of Blues, on a tour named after a Weird Al single. That’s … that’s pretty white. [15 Lansdowne St., Boston. 888.693.2583. 5pm/$15 adv, $20 dos. hob.com/boston]

At 14 years (and counting) this month, An Tua Nua’s weekly goth/industrial night, Ceremony, is one of Boston’s longest-running evening fixtures … which shouldn’t be too surprising, seeing as there’s not exactly a goth/industrial county fair to pick up the slack in daylight. Continue reading

AFTERNOON LADYBAND BLOWUT @ MIDWAY CAFE

Girls continue in their ruthless pursuit of “just having fun” no matter the consequences, with an unprovoked assault on the hallowed tradition of a lazy Saturday afternoon. Those sacred hours of tedious reflection between hangover and drinking again have been rudely interrupted with the Midway Cafe‘s full-on make-up pick-up blowout, as the finest in local lady bands, including Apple Betty, The Nose Jobs [Yes!—Ed.] and Full Body Anchor assemble for the coming-out party of newcomer Detroit Garage act The Grinds. Beer and dancing? Before six? What is this, anywhere but New England? [3496 Washington St., Boston. 617.524.9038. 4pm/all ages/$5. midwaycafe.com]

THE BATTLESHIPS COMETH @ THE MILKY WAY

Female-fronted pop-rock bands from JP, unite! Oh. Holy shit. There’re quite a few of you, aren’t there. Yikes. Well, obviously we’d like for everyone to take the stage at The Milky Way tonight for a kinetic X-chromosome-fueled throwdown, but due to time constraints, we’re going to have to be a bit selective. The Battleships Cometh, get ready for sound check. Ginger Ibex, we dig that whole classical by way of The Pogues vibe, you’re in. This Blue Heaven, come on, you guys are Boston indie-icons. Don’t even kid. Alright and … St. Helena. Yes, they’ve got a male lead. But they were named after the mother of Emperor Constantine, and they’re awesome. ALMOST AND EVENING @ THE CHARLESTOWN WORKING THEATRE

More than simply the shorter, uglier Coen brother (with less hair), younger sibling Ethan just so happens to enjoy his own moderately successful writing career outside of the shadow of Joel’s luscious, untamed locks, thank you very much. On top of a poetry anthology and a book of short stories, both of which received … reviews … Ethan also tried his hand off Broadway, with Almost An Evening, endearingly described on the Coens’ website as “his theatrical effort.” Guess Joel’s the webmaster. Charlestown Working Theatre presents the collection of three short plays, covering the topics of life, death and resentful codependent relationships. 5 Drink Minimum: The Night Life Edition

5D_1240IntroMD

Every so often, we cast our staff to the winds and tell them to get drunk at a venue of our choosing (yes, they get paid for it). For this edition, we found eight quality dance nights (well, one karaoke night) to profile, each with its own distinct genre. Continue reading

BESS ROGERS AND ALLISON WEISS @ MIDDLE EAST UPSTAIRS

logo

Fresh off their funk-adorbs Quest For Glory tour, twee-lightful flannel-songwriting set Bess Rogers and Allison Weiss once again Giant-Size Team-Up for an early evening of acoustic melodifying and wry smiles over at the Middle East Upstairs. With deceptively deep ditties plucked from their air like audible math class doodles, Rogers and Weiss work in the realm of the industriously mischievous, showering their audiences with creative whimsy tied up in red tortoiseshell frames and a vintage sundress. In other words, it’s the kind of music where everyone’s wearing a scarf and generally having a pretty good time. Please join them. [472 Mass. FORT POINT RECORDINGS SHOWCASE @ MIDDLE EAST UPSTAIRS

A new Boston-based record label is a cause for celebration. A new kickass Boston-based record label is a reason to tell you to go and support the shit out of it. They call themselves Fort Point Recordings and with a roster than already includes Viva Viva, In Like Lions, Banditas and Endless Wave they’re already at the finish line. The specialist thing is that while each group is different they all have one thing in common: They’re all quite good. And they are on the same label, so make that two things. [472 Mass. GORILLAZ @ AGGANIS ARENA

Alt-electro Virtual Band Gorillaz represent a vital watershed moment in the development of popular music in the early 21st century. With the release of, and the subsequent critical and commercial acclaim for, their self-titled debut album, Gorillaz, it was now no longer possible to explain music to old people: “Alt-electro? The fuck does that even mean? Those words mean nothing! A virtual band? So what, they pretend to play music? Oh, they pretend to be people really playing music. Oh, that makes a hell of a lot more sense.” See muttery codger history in the making, live (sorta) at Agganis Arena. [925 Comm. Ave., Boston. 617.358.7000. 7:30pm/$49.50-$90. agganisarena.com]
