2011 had a lot of solid new shows (and plenty of duds), but the show that caught my heart most this year was IFC’s Portlandia. Portland, Oregon is home to an eclectic population which the show skewers lovingly with hilarious character-based sketches. The show is the brainchild Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen and Sleater-Kinney guitarist/singer Carrie Brown, who also get a lot of their famous friends to guest star. I’m partial to seeing Kyle MacLachlan (famously of Twin Peaks, infamously of Showgirls) as Portland’s loving, reggae bass playing, bicycle-riding mayor. Continue reading
