Can somebody explain to me how I wound up in Brighton Center two buckets deep into a High Life marathon? Because THAT happened. Good thing the music was good. Continue reading
Southern-fried Gothic duo The Handsome Family, spookifyin’ the Rosebud stage this evening, isn’t Gothic in the “eye-shadow and spiky-wristband” sense of the word, but rather the “blood-stained bluegrass and murder ballad” interpretation. You know, “thunder broke the heavens above the flaming plantation,” “the naked widow McClintock rode half-mad at midnight” “hark, the moonshine still done broke,” that sort of thing. Plus, they’re totally married, so they’re definitely working the American Gothic angle a tad. Not bad. Short of an Age of Empires reference, they pretty much got all the good kinds of Goth covered.

Three-piece kitchen-sink collective Muy Cansado can kick ass in over six different genres, from punk to rock to some sort of folky-rock to what we’re pretty damn sure is calypso. Which, if we’re doing the math right, comes to ratio a little over two asses kicked per band member. To put this in perspective, the average person kicks about a third of an ass in their lifetime. You can’t argue with those numbers. No joke. They’re numbers, they don’t give a shit. Tres Somnolent starts off their Summer residency at Rosebud this evening, so guard that kiester and kick or be kicked.

Brendan Boogie hates New York and loves man-hugs, which pretty much nails our two-point criteria for what it takes to be a stalwart figurehead of the Boston music scene. And as a total bonus, Boogie also happens to be a fairly talented musician, so that brand-new EP topping off his merch table at the Rosebud this evening should be worth a couple of listens. At the very least, its purchase almost guarantees Boogie-proximity, which in turn, almost guarantees Boogie-embrace. If you’ve been missing out on your Boogie-cuddling lately, now would definitely be the time to catch up.

Sidewalk Driver embodies everything needed to be a successful Boston band: a crazy rock and roll sound, a legion of loyal fans and some sick onstage get-up. Tad McKitterick and Kate Murdoch combine as one musically inclined powerhouse, but it takes more than that to impress the masses. And by masses I mean me. Continue reading

At the first listen of “Pet Names,” I felt as though Hugh Grant was standing on a barstool in front of me with his arms outstretched, attempting to win over my heart in a hokey pub. Continue reading
